Orange’s Plan4HealthNJ initiative has quickly moved from planning to action. Since accepting the grant in April, the City has established its Plan4Health committee, launched the Maptionnaire community survey, and begun engaging residents through a variety of outreach efforts—all within just a few months.

The first committee meeting, held in June, brought together stakeholders to learn about the Plan4HealthNJ program, define team roles, and begin planning for a new Public Health Element to be incorporated into Orange’s Master Plan. The committee also explored how health considerations can strengthen existing planning elements, including land use, housing, transportation, recreation, sustainability, and open space.

One of the meeting’s key outcomes was the launch of the Maptionnaire survey. Committee members immediately committed to sharing the survey through their own networks, demonstrating how clear goals and practical tools can inspire meaningful community participation. Just days later, survey flyers were distributed at Entrepreneur Day, expanding outreach to residents and reinforcing the project’s early momentum.

Community engagement has continued to grow through partnerships with the Department of Health, faith-based organizations, long-term care facilities, and local schools, including the addition of a student representative to ensure youth perspectives are part of the conversation. The survey remains open through the end of August, giving residents the opportunity to identify the places they use every day and share the experiences that shape their health and quality of life.

Looking ahead, Orange will continue engaging the community through workshops, focus groups, and local events while completing its health and land use analysis. The insights gathered from both residents and data will help shape a Public Health Element that reflects the needs and priorities of the entire community.
