This spring marked the launch of Newark’s Plan4HealthNJ initiative, beginning with an important milestone: the first Plan4HealthNJ Committee meeting, held in conjunction with a special Planning Board meeting. The gathering brought together Planning Board members, City staff, and community partners to learn about the initiative and its ultimate goal—developing a new Public Health Element for Newark’s Master Plan.
During the meeting, participants received an overview of the program, explored the tools and resources available through the grant, and viewed a live demonstration of the Maptionnaire community survey. Seeing the survey in action helped participants better understand how residents will share their experiences and identify barriers to healthcare access, making the engagement process more tangible and accessible.
As the project moves forward, one lesson has become clear: Newark’s size requires a unique approach to planning and community engagement. Coordinating a diverse group of stakeholders presents logistical challenges, but it also creates opportunities to reach a broader audience. To support continued collaboration, the project team is exploring more consistent meeting schedules and additional opportunities for engagement.
Community outreach is already underway. The Maptionnaire survey has been promoted through social media, a citywide text campaign, and community meetings to ensure residents across Newark’s neighborhoods have an opportunity to participate. At the same time, the project team has begun compiling health demographic data that will be paired with community feedback to better understand local health needs and priorities.
Looking ahead, Newark will continue expanding outreach through community workshops and focus groups while completing its health data analysis. Together, resident input and data-driven insights will help shape a Public Health Element that reflects the needs, experiences, and vision of Newark’s diverse communities.
